UC Botanical Garden launches search portal on updated website

The University of California Botanical Garden is busy upping its game in the virtual world: besides a spiffy, attractive, revised website, with social features and expanded content, a new search engine for the Garden's present and past specimens has been released to the public.  You can find the link to the new search engine on the Garden's Collections page, the Search Plant Database link:

Introductory GPU Computation Workshop: February 1 & 8, 2016

A two-session, introductory workshop on using Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for computationally intensive tasks will be held on Monday February 1 and February 8, 2016, from 4:10 to 5:30 p.m., in 1011 Evans Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. The workshop will focus on computations in the areas of data science, data analysis, statistics, and machine learning.

On December 18, 2015, the Research Data Management program held a workshop that was attended by thirty staff from the Library, Campus Shared Services-IT, and Research IT.  The workshop’s purpose was to discuss the research data management challenges these consultants are addressing, and to provide training on tools that can be used throughout the research data lifecycle.

Warewulf provisioning tool selected as OpenHPC 1.0 component

OpenHPC 1.0, a new open source initiative to advance high performance computing, has selected Warewulf as its provisioning component. Warewulf is a configuration and management toolkit created by Research IT’s partners at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Its capabilities include deploying software and configuration to clusters and clouds; and performing ongoing management and monitoring tasks, such as adding user accounts and checking for node failures.

Berkeley Lab opens state-of-the-art facility for computational science

On November 12, 2015, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory  (Berkeley Lab) opened a new center for advancing computational science and networking. Shyh Wang Hall is named in honor of the UCB professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science who passed away in 1992. Shyh Wang is especially well-known for his research in semiconductors, magnetic resonances and semiconductor lasers.
