UC Berkeley Cloud Computing Meetup Now Virtual

April 23, 2020

UC Berkeley research labs have been at the forefront of the design and planning for much of today's cloud computing industry. There are many more examples across campus of teams using, running, and facilitating access to cloud based systems including those that support the teaching of data science using platforms like Jupyterhub (also developed at UC Berkeley).

In order to grow and sustain cloud computing across many disciplines, Research IT is working with UC Berkeley CTO Bill Allison, Division of Computing, Data Science and Society and Berkeley Skydeck to host a monthly Cloud Computing Meetup which is now virtual. The meetup brings together students, researchers, faculty, IT staff and the wider local community to exchange and share their experiences and work in designing and operating services built on cloud architectures. It provides an interdisciplinary platform for the community to present and discuss the most recent innovations and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the field of cloud computing.

The UC Berkeley Cloud Computing Meetup features speakers and engaging discussions around current issues in cloud computing with a focus on both research and industry. See how cloud-based tools, services and infrastructures are helping yield unprecedented access to design engineering and manufacturing for the masses through HaaS. Find out about how data scientists are building and deploying predictive models on very large datasets using the cloud to target chronic kidney disease. Gain exposure to the administrative and technological hurdles researchers and IT groups face when providing secure cloud computing environments for HIPAA compliant health research.

The goal is to provide a welcoming, inclusive community and host meetups that are open to everyone with curiosity.

You don't have to be an expert, or have anytechnical experience or knowledge in the topic. Participating in the meetups is a great way to start to get involved and stay informed about cloud computing, and an opportunity to learn from each other and grow your network.

Join us at 5pm every last Tuesday of the month on Zoom. When campus reopens, we will meet again at Berkeley SkyDeck with pizza in a child and baby friendly space. Join the local gathering to exchange the latest advances in cloud computing technologies, identify emerging needs, and define the future of cloud computing.
