Researching in Troubled Times: A Community Exchange About Impacts of COVID-19

April 30, 2020
Thursday, April 30, 2020 - 4:30am to 5:30am

The current pandemic has disrupted nearly every aspect of normal life across the globe. Researchers at Berkeley also face particular challenges: funding losses and interruptions; lack of access to lab spaces and equipment; loss of data and specimens; and for those working with community partners and underrepresented populations, new vulnerabilities and inequities. Graduate and post-doctoral students also face a tough job market, and early career researchers are disproportionately affected in terms of tenure, promotion, and grant prospects. At the same time, some Berkeley researchers have emerged as leaders and innovators in the fight against SARS-CoV-2, and shifting priorities, new collaborations, and new funding streams are creating other opportunities.

Please join us on Thursday, April 30, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for an open conversation and peer exchange about your experience, ideas, questions and concerns as researchers during COVID-19. Whether you’re a lead investigator, a senior team member, just starting out, whether you're working in STEM or the arts--whether you’re looking for support, advice, resources, tools, or community--all are welcome.

Academic support staff from the Library, D-Lab, Research IT, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and other groups will be on hand to offer suggestions and advice, and the conversation will be organized around topic-based breakout rooms so participants can choose the best fit for their needs and everyone can learn from one another.

Researching in Troubled Times is a new collaboration inspired by the program series Teaching in Troubled Times. As that program has done, we hope to provide a communal and productive space for investigators, research team members, and support staff to come together to discuss topics vital to their research.

NOTE: Please register below for this program so we know how many people to expect. In the comments part of the registration form, please note any particular topics you want to discuss or resources you have to share. We will send out meeting details and connection information closer to the event date.
