CASC 2014 highlights: Data Management, NSF's ACI program, Box & HIPAA Alignment

A funders’ view of data management, NSF’s Advanced Cyberinfrastructure program, and bringing Box.com into alignment with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act’s privacy rule were highlights of the 2014 Fall Meeting of the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC) for Research IT’s David Greenbaum and Chris Hoffman, who attended from September 17-19.

Welcome Camille Villa, Digital Humanities Assistant!

Research IT is happy to announce that Camille Villa has recently joined the group as a Digital Humanities Assistant!

As a student employee in Research IT, Camille played a major role in organizing the #HackFSM hackathon during spring 2014, including suggesting the Free Speech Movement Digital Archive as the area of focus for the hackathon.

BRC HPC Condo Cluster Off to a Roaring Start

Research IT's new BRC HPC Condo Cluster service offering has gotten off to a roaring start. The new service, officially launched on May 22 at a special event held at Sutardja Dai Hall, allows faculty and principal investigators to purchase compute nodes (individual servers) from their grants or other available funds, to add to campus' new compute cluster SAVIO.

Berkeley Prosopography Services seminar through UCB’s Social Science Matrix

Laurie Pearce and Patrick Schmitz of the Berkeley Prosopography Services project will team up to lead a Fall 2014 seminar through the UC Berkeley Social Science Matrix. The seminar will bring together researchers from multiple disciplines who work with historical social networks or whose theoretical work contributes to understanding how historical social networks are formed and revealed.
